Anxiety Symptoms

Anxiety is part of the brain's natural fight-or-flight response reacting to the stress of adjusting to continual changes in people's lives and environments.

During fight-or-flight, the heart and lungs speed up. The brain also releases stress hormones, including adrenaline. Originally, anxiety symptoms were the human body's natural way to warn against danger. In modern times, however, it can be an unwanted effect caused by a nerve-racking or stressful situation.

Anxiety, as a body response, is somewhat outdated because people are no longer in danger of being eaten by an animal on a daily hunt or starving to death if they do not perform well at their job. This, however, does not mean anxiety is not real and cannot interfere with daily mental and physical health. As a matter of fact, it certainly can.

Anxiety can be accompanied by a variety of physical and psychological symptoms depending on its level and people's individual body responses.

Physical Anxiety Symptoms:

* Abdominal discomfort
* Diarrhea
* Dry mouth
* Sweaty or shaky hands
* Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
* Flushing of the body or face
* Tightness or pain in chest
* Shortness of breath
* Dizziness
* Frequent urination
* Difficulty swallowing

Psychological Anxiety Symptoms:

* Insomnia
* Irritability or anger
* Inability to concentrate
* Fear of madness
* Feeling unreal and not in control of your actions (depersonalization)

When Your Anxiety Symptoms Go Beyond Normal:

Anxiety that interferes with your daily life and disrupts your ability to have normal relationships, perform appropriately at your job or interact normally with others has gone beyond an acceptable level. Anxiety this intense often is symptomatic of another mental health problem, such as depression, personality disorder, alcohol misuse or withdrawal from long-term use of tranquillizers such as diazepam (Valium).

Anxiety is the main symptom of several other mental illnesses. These are called anxiety disorders, which include acute stress reaction, adjustment reaction, post-traumatic stress disorder, phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder or generalized anxiety disorder. If your anxiety symptoms have become uncontrollable, you may be experiencing a more serious problem or disorder. If so, do not be afraid to seek medical help.

After identifying your symptoms, you should figure out the best way for you to relieve some of the anxiety in your life. Depending on how intense your symptoms are, stress management, relaxation techniques, breathing exercises and medical treatment can help you anxiety under control, enabling you to live a longer and healthier life.
